PS5 Midnight Black Japanese-only edition opens for pre-orders in Japan

Sony's black Japanese-only PS5 Digital Edition is now available to pre-order ahead of its 19 November launch, alongside a matching disc drive.

PlayStation 5 Digital Edition Midnight Black Japanese-only console with DualSense controller

Sony has opened pre-orders in Japan for a new black version of its Japanese-only PlayStation 5 Digital Edition. The PS5 Digital Edition Midnight Black Japanese-only model launches on 19 November 2026 for ¥55,000 including tax, with reservations beginning today through PlayStation retailers and online shops in Japan. 1

The console is a colour variation of the existing Japanese-only Digital Edition rather than a new hardware revision. It has no built-in disc drive, includes an 825GB SSD and is designed to play downloaded PS5 and PS4 games from the Japanese PlayStation Store. The matching Midnight Black Disc Drive is also due on 19 November for ¥11,980, giving buyers the option to add physical-game support later. 1

The Japanese-only restriction is the detail that matters most here. Sony says the console can be used only with a PlayStation account set to Japanese for both the system language and country or region. That makes this a Japan-market product, not a broadly available black PS5 for importers looking for a cosmetic upgrade. The listing also means its appeal will depend heavily on whether buyers are already committed to Japan's PlayStation ecosystem.

The hardware keeps the familiar PS5 Digital Edition feature set, including the high-speed SSD, 3D audio, PS4 backwards compatibility and the DualSense controller's haptic feedback and adaptive triggers. The black finish matches existing Midnight Black accessories such as PlayStation Portal, so Sony is clearly positioning the console as part of a coordinated colour range rather than as a performance-focused refresh. 1

Sony's announcement also adds the model to its Japanese PS5 warranty campaign. Customers who buy an eligible console and apply during the campaign period can receive two years of manufacturer cover instead of the usual one, with the offer running until 31 March 2027. 1

The timing gives the model a strong launch window: it arrives on the same day as several major games listed by Sony, including Grand Theft Auto VI. That does not change what the console can do, but it makes the new colour more visible during one of the busiest periods in the Japanese PlayStation calendar. The practical choice is straightforward: buyers who want a black machine can order the Digital Edition now, while anyone who still buys discs should budget for the separate drive as well.

Our opinion

The Midnight Black model is a neat cosmetic option, but the Japanese-only account requirement makes it a deliberately narrow release. Its value is clearest for people already buying digital games in Japan and willing to accept the extra cost of the disc drive if their library includes physical releases. For everyone else, it is a handsome finish rather than a meaningful upgrade — and the existing PS5 hardware remains the more important part of the purchase.
