Overwatch Season 5 adds Solo Leveling skins and a vampire hero

Season 5 of Overwatch is live from 6 October with Doctrine, a Support hero who moves life force between the two teams, a new Icelandic Escort map and a Solo Leveling crossover that runs until 19 October.

Season 5 of Overwatch is live from today, 6 October, and it draws the Reign of Talon storyline towards its close with the game's newest Support hero, a prison break in Iceland and a crossover with the Solo Leveling anime.

Doctrine moves life force between the two teams

Doctrine is the long-teased Support whose kit is built around shuffling health between the two sides. His Eternal Scepter heals allies and damages enemies at mid-to-long range, and a pair of mechanical, bat-like drones grants the team extra healing and attack speed. Infuse temporarily empowers his other abilities, while his Ultimate redistributes health outright: allies pick up Overhealth as enemy maximum health is capped for the duration.

His backstory does the heavy lifting for the theme. Doctrine used his own technology to keep himself and his brother alive, was eventually condemned to the Watchpoint: Grimsvotn prison, and has now been broken out by Doomfist, who returns to the centre of the story. Blizzard describes the season as the final chapter of a narrative it has been assembling for years.

Grimsvotn, Halloween and a Roadhog rework

Season 5 also adds Watchpoint: Grimsvotn, the first new Escort map in years. Set inside an Icelandic volcanic fissure, it began life as an Overwatch watchpoint before Helix turned it into a prison for some of the world's most dangerous criminals, and the season walks players straight through the aftermath of Doctrine's escape.

Halloween runs through the season from 6 October to 2 November. Mystery Madness: Graveyard Games turns being eliminated into a mechanic, handing out hero powers that change every time a player dies, Sombra moves into an entirely new role and Roadhog picks up a rework. Vaulted Battle Passes from earlier seasons also return. Blizzard adds that Wuyang is ascending toward immortality, and that Lucio has put a small dancing frog in his gun.

The Shadow Monarch gate opens

The headline crossover, Overwatch x Shadow Monarch, runs from 6 to 19 October and reworks the game in dark-fantasy, anime-styled cosmetics. Genji takes on the mantle of Sung Jinwoo, with Cha Hae-In and Choi Jong-In standing in for the S-Rank Hunters and Igris and Iron answering the call of the Shadow Army. The collaboration is credited to Solo Leveling Animation Partners alongside Blizzard Entertainment.

Our opinion

Blizzard has finally stopped treating a new season as a scattergun of cosmetics. Season 5 sells itself on three things that actually change how the game feels: a Support who messes with maximum health, an Escort map that has been missing from the rotation for years, and a crossover that maps the Solo Leveling power fantasy onto a hero shooter almost too neatly. Leaning into anime for a collaboration is not new, but picking a series whose whole premise is levelling up from the bottom of the hunter rankings is a far better fit than a generic skin drop.

The risk sits with Doctrine. A hero who can cap enemy maximum health is the kind of idea that reads elegantly in a trailer and turns into a balance headache within a fortnight, and Overwatch has spent a decade learning that lesson the hard way. Everything else in the season is the safe part. If the crossover brings in the Solo Leveling audience and Doctrine does not break ranked play, this will look like the most confident Overwatch has been in years.
