NO KING IN HELL releases a free Steam demo

The free demo introduces the turn-based strategy RPG’s monster recruitment and territorial systems ahead of its planned Q1 2027 launch.

A turn-based battle in NO KING IN HELL, with two sibling heroes facing a demon in a dark stone chamber

NO KING IN HELL (魔界群雄割拠) is now available as a free demo on Steam, giving players an early look at the turn-based strategy RPG’s ruined kingdom, monster recruitment and territorial battles. Developer sasoriken-games says the full release is planned for the first quarter of 2027. 12

A kingdom with no king

The game follows a brother and sister who awaken after 100 years to find their father’s castle in ruins. Calling themselves the Dawn, they begin with no territory and no followers, then set out to reclaim a home in a demon world. The English title, NO KING IN HELL, presents the same premise as the Japanese title from a different angle: a realm left without a ruler. 1

The demo covers the opening part of the story, from the siblings’ awakening through the reclamation of Ashen Castletown. Players can explore the town and mines, meet monsters, take on requests and fight across the same terrain they were travelling through. The developer describes the game as an HD-2D strategy RPG connecting exploration, monster raising and territorial play. 1

Weaken enemies, then recruit them

Combat is built around a choice between defeating an enemy and trying to Seize it. A weakened monster can be brought into the player’s side for the current battle, creating a tactical reason to manage damage rather than simply finish every opponent. The game’s official page also highlights elevation, line of sight, hit chances and estimated damage before a move is selected. 1

The wider progression system lets allies take classes, carry skills over from earlier jobs and evolve or fuse with other monsters. Strong recruits can be promoted to demon generals, who command squads during the campaign. The full game is intended to expand this from a small party’s journey into the development of territory, with players choosing which bases to attack and which to defend. 1

What is in the demo

The free Windows demo includes part of the main story and lets players continue exploring unlocked areas after reaching its story endpoint. Training, conversations and squad organisation remain available, while the full game’s larger territorial systems and eight-ruler Free Mode are planned for the eventual release. The developer warns that some of the images and videos on its site were recorded in the full game, so features and values shown outside the demo may change. 1

The Steam listing identifies NO KING IN HELL as a single-player indie strategy RPG from sasoriken-games. It supports English and Japanese, and the developer says the demo is available now ahead of the planned Q1 2027 launch. 2

Our opinion

A demo is the right way to introduce a strategy RPG with this many connected systems. The most promising hook is the decision to weaken enemies for recruitment rather than treating every fight as a simple elimination puzzle. That mechanic should give the opening battles a little more personality, while the territory layer gives the full release a clear direction beyond a sequence of maps. The real test will be whether those systems stay readable as the campaign expands, but the free demo makes that question easy for players to answer themselves.
