Nintendo Switch Sports Resort gets October launch

Nintendo Switch Sports Resort is bringing the Wii-era holiday island back for a new generation, with Nintendo confirming an October 22 launch on Nintendo Switch 2 and showing off a trailer packed with familiar sports and a few new ways to wander around Wuhu Island.

The announcement arrived during the Nintendo Direct livestream, according to Anime News Network’s report. The new game is positioned as the successor to Wii Sports Resort, but it is not merely dusting off the old disc and hoping nobody notices.

What's actually going on

Nintendo says the game will launch for Nintendo Switch 2 on 22 October. The new trailer reveals that players can freely explore Wuhu Island, the setting first introduced by Wii Sports Resort, and introduces a new Island Crown mode.

The game includes 12 sports: Boxing, Table Tennis, Archery, Tennis, Volleyball, Bowling, Basketball, Golf, Thumb Wrestling, Skateboarding, Power Cruising and Prop Plane. A Jump Rope minigame is also available as a warm-up activity.

Players can choose between Sportsmates characters and standard Miis. Wuhu Island has appeared elsewhere in Nintendo’s catalogue, including Wii Fit, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, so this is less a brand-new resort than a familiar Nintendo playground getting a fresh lease of life.

Why you should care

The appeal is obvious: local multiplayer, motion-friendly activities and a colourful island are the sort of low-friction fun that can turn a family gathering into either a lovely afternoon or a competitive grudge match over virtual table tennis. The bigger change is the freedom to explore, which gives the package more of a place to inhabit than a menu of disconnected minigames.

The comparison with the original matters. Wii Sports Resort used Wii MotionPlus to make motion controls more accurate, while its successor arrives on Switch 2 with the Sportsmates avatar system and an expanded setting. Nintendo has not suggested that every old sport is returning, so nostalgia should not be mistaken for a complete feature list.

Our opinion

This looks like the right sort of sequel for Nintendo: familiar enough to understand instantly, but with Wuhu Island exploration and Island Crown mode giving it something beyond a greatest-hits collection. The 12-sport line-up is promising, although the real test will be whether the new modes have enough depth to survive beyond the first family tournament. Keep it on the October watchlist — especially if your Switch 2 is currently collecting dust — but wait for pricing and a closer look at the online features before booking the entire holiday.
