Nintendo Switch 2's Japan-only bundle arrives 12 November

Nintendo is bundling a downloadable game of your choice with a Japan-only Switch 2 console from 12 November, priced at 63,980 yen.

Nintendo will sell a Japan-only Switch 2 bundle that throws in a downloadable game of your choosing, with the console-and-software set landing on 12 November for 63,980 yen.

The bundle pairs a Nintendo Switch 2 Japanese-Language System (Japan Only) with a download code that can be redeemed on Nintendo eShop for one of three Nintendo-published games at no additional cost: Mario Kart World, Nintendo Switch Sports Resort for Nintendo Switch 2, or Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream for Nintendo Switch. Nintendo says the code stays valid until 31 March 2027, and redeeming it needs a Nintendo Account and an internet connection.

What Nintendo is actually selling

Alongside the console and the download code, the box carries the standard first-party furniture: Joy-Con 2 (L+R), a Joy-Con 2 Wrist Strap, the Nintendo Switch 2 Dock, a Joy-Con 2 Grip, the Switch 2 AC adapter, a USB-C charging cable and an Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable. Nintendo has set a manufacturer's suggested retail price of 63,980 yen, tax included.

Why the Japan-only label matters

The Japanese-Language System (Japan Only) wording is doing real work here. This is Nintendo's domestic model, aimed at a Japanese-language, Japan-region audience rather than the multi-language hardware the company ships elsewhere. Nintendo's release prices the bundle in yen only and makes no mention of a release outside Japan, so anyone outside the country looking to buy in will be relying on importers rather than a local shelf.

The games on offer also say something about who Nintendo is chasing. Mario Kart World and Nintendo Switch Sports Resort are Switch 2 titles, but Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream is a Nintendo Switch game, which puts the bundle squarely in front of households that have not yet moved to the new console rather than the players who bought one at launch.

Our opinion

A pack-in game is the oldest trick in console retail, but this one reads less like generosity than arithmetic. Nintendo is competing for Japanese households that have not yet bought into Switch 2, and the cheapest way to move a price-sensitive buyer is to make the first piece of software feel free. Offering Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream as one of the three picks is telling, because a Switch 1 title is the tell that the target is the family still running old hardware, not the enthusiast. The 31 March 2027 expiry on the code then turns a gift into a deadline, and a deadline is a sales tactic rather than a favour.
