Fallout 76 roadmap turns pets into levelling companions

Bethesda Game Studios has mapped out a year of Appalachia, from pets that level beside you in December to Hideouts and a map that finally turns toward the Capital Wasteland.

Fallout 76 players will get pets that fight and level alongside them, a bounty circuit through Skyline Valley and a map that finally creeps toward the Capital Wasteland, according to a roadmap Bethesda Game Studios published on 30 September 2026.

The September letter from the directors, signed by Creative Director Jon Rush and Production Director Bill LaCoste, sets out what Appalachia gets between now and the summer of 2027. It also lands as media and content creators begin talking about the World Pets update, which arrives this winter.

Pets that grow with you

World Pets lands in December and changes what a C.A.M.P. Pet is for. Instead of a decoration tied to your camp, each pet becomes a companion that adventures with you and levels up as you travel together. Bethesda says every interaction built for C.A.M.P. Pets carries over, with several new additions on top.

Bounties, Hideouts and The Drifter

Winter sends Wasteland Wanderers back to Skyline Valley, where a rise in bounties explains why the Blue Ridge Caravan Company was forced to shutter its operations there. Players hardened by that work are meant to take their newly levelled pets along for the ride.

Spring 2027 adds Hideouts: tougher encampments positioned between the early endgame and Raids, filled with the worst Appalachia has left. A new Marked difficulty raises the stakes further, and a masked rival called The Drifter is hunting the same rewards as you. Bethesda is keeping his employer a mystery for now.

A colder war to the southeast

The map then expands again toward the Capital Wasteland, almost 200 years before the events of Fallout 3. The letter describes scabbed cliffs pocked with black snow and ash from a war that ended 27 years earlier, with two derelict Enclave operators locked in a cold war of their own.

Our opinion

The interesting shift here is what the pet update is really for. Making a companion that levels as you play is a retention mechanic dressed up as a cosmetic upgrade, and Bethesda is honest enough about it: pets give players a reason to keep logging in between content drops rather than only on update day.

The map expansion is the more consequential promise. Walking players back toward a capital they last saw through the eyes of the Lone Wanderer is the kind of nostalgia play that can easily feel cheap, and it will only work if the new region has its own identity rather than borrowed landmarks.
