Mycopunk launches on Steam with Very Positive reviews
Mycopunk's 1.0 launch brings its limb-stealing enemies and grid-based weapon upgrades out of early access, with encouraging early Steam reviews.
Mycopunk has launched its 1.0 release on Steam after an early-access run that began in July 2025. The co-operative looter shooter is now drawing a Very Positive user rating on Steam, while its most recent reviews sit at 81% positive according to the figures reported by GameRant. The game is also available on PS5 and is included with PlayStation Plus Premium and Extra.
What makes Mycopunk different
Developed by Pigeons at Play, Mycopunk sends up to four players into missions against fungal-infected alien technology. The concept is familiar enough — land on a hostile planet, fight through waves of enemies and make it back alive — but its combat systems add some unusually messy complications. Enemies can pick up body parts from fallen creatures, so leaving a battlefield uncleared may create tougher threats later.
The weapon system is just as distinctive. Upgrades are arranged on a grid, meaning players must fit modules together rather than simply selecting a linear perk. That turns equipment management into a small spatial puzzle: the strongest combination is not necessarily the one with the most powerful individual parts, but the one that fits the weapon being built.
The 1.0 release adds a playable character, a weapon, a mission and a region, alongside performance improvements. GameRant also reports that Pigeons at Play has continued issuing patches since launch, although bugs remain part of the early post-release picture. Steam lists online co-op, full controller support and a Windows release, with the game published by Devolver Digital.
The launch-day reception is encouraging, but the numbers need context. An 81% recent-review figure is a useful snapshot rather than a permanent verdict, particularly for a game whose full release is still new and whose developers are actively fixing problems. The more meaningful test will be whether the unusual enemy and weapon systems continue to make repeated co-op missions feel different after the first few hours.
Our opinion
Mycopunk looks more interesting than its familiar looter-shooter outline suggests. The limb-stealing enemies and grid-based weapon upgrades give players reasons to think about how they fight, not just which damage number is largest. That is a promising foundation for a co-op game, though its long-term appeal will depend on whether the 1.0 content and ongoing patches can keep those systems from becoming repetitive.
