Monster Hunter Wilds Ascendance will not add a 15th weapon
Capcom says Ascendance will instead expand all 14 existing weapons with free tweaks and new actions, while the Boost Bracer adds a shared combat system.
Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance will not introduce a 15th weapon type, but Capcom says every existing weapon will benefit from the expansion’s broader combat changes. The decision came from a concern that a new weapon would either overlap with one of the current 14 or fail to offer a meaningful reason for hunters to choose it. 1
Instead, the team is adding systems that apply across the whole weapon roster. The Boost Bracer is designed to create new openings during ordinary fights rather than serve only as a finishing move. Its effects are fixed per weapon, with new actions appearing while the hunter is in Boost mode. 1
Capcom also says some weapons will receive balance adjustments and new techniques. Those changes, including the ability to switch weapons without dismounting from a Seikret and a revised interface, will arrive in the base game as an update when Ascendance launches. The expansion-only additions include the Boost Bracer and Master Rank content. 1
The interview also confirms that the Switch 2 version is a Game-Key Card. Capcom says getting Wilds running naturally on Nintendo’s newer hardware required reviewing the game’s processing and deciding carefully which compromises could be made without undermining the experience. 1
Ascendance is set several years after the base game and adds the Skybound Eyrie, new monsters including Gundoraja, and returning Elder Dragons such as Lao-Shan Lung, Kushala Daora and Teostra. It is due in 2027 for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with a Switch 2 version planned after the base game arrives on that platform. 1
Our opinion
Capcom’s answer makes sense for a series built around long-term weapon mastery. A 15th weapon would be exciting on reveal day, but it would also create another balance burden and another moveset that has to remain interesting for years. Giving every hunter new options is less flashy, yet it should make the expansion feel like a genuine evolution rather than a single new toy.
