MegaBattle launches on Steam with robot-building deckbuilder chaos

MadCat’s sci-fi roguelike combines 134 cards, four robot classes and modular parts in turn-based arena battles.

MegaBattle is out now on Steam, inviting players to build two things at once: a deck of combat cards and a modular robot to throw into turn-based arena fights. MadCat’s sci-fi roguelike deckbuilder is aiming at the part of the strategy crowd that looks at a normal card battler and thinks, ‘Lovely, but can I also swap my robot’s legs?’

According to the launch information from MadCat, MegaBattle combines attack and defence cards with robot parts that change how each run plays. Victories earn new cards and components, letting players reshape both their deck and their machine as they push through escalating challenges. The game launched on Steam on 27 August 2026.

Cards, chassis and controlled chaos

The core pitch is wonderfully easy to understand. Battles are turn-based arena duels, with players using attack and defence cards to control the fight, punish openings and respond to different enemies. The Steam listing describes the same loop as drafting upgrades, scavenging for parts and assembling a robot built around your preferred playstyle.

There are 134 unique cards to collect and refine, alongside four robot classes. The modular system lets players change the arms, legs, torso and head, with each component bringing its own effects. That means the buildcraft is not just about hunting for the biggest damage number: MadCat says players can lean into defensive counterplay, glass-cannon damage engines or combo-heavy control decks.

Runs are procedural, so the path, rewards and problems change from attempt to attempt. The announcement also promises multiple endings, with a definitive conclusion waiting after the tenth victory. In plain English, this is the familiar roguelike treadmill — lose, learn, rebuild and have another go — with the extra wrinkle that your robot’s hardware has to make sense alongside the cards in your hand.

A small game with a big mechanical hook

The useful distinction here is that MegaBattle is not merely putting a robot skin over a deckbuilder. Its central gimmick is the relationship between the two systems: a card strategy may push you towards a particular chassis, while a useful part could tempt you into rebuilding the deck around it. That kind of friction is where these games either become deliciously clever or collapse into a spreadsheet wearing a cape.

MadCat’s own site describes the game as combining deckbuilding and fighting-game ideas, while Steam lists MadCat Corp and Cavylabs as the developers and MadCat Corp as publisher. The store page currently lists a €11.59 launch price after a 20% discount from €14.49, although launch promotions are temporary by nature and may change.

Our opinion

The promising bit is the pairing of deckbuilding with physical robot customisation. Four classes and 134 cards are a decent foundation, but the real test will be whether the parts meaningfully alter decision-making rather than acting as four slots for slightly shinier numbers. The tenth-victory ending is a smart carrot, too — provided the procedural runs stay varied instead of becoming the same fight in a different hat.

For now, MegaBattle looks like one to watch if you enjoy roguelike card games and want a bit more metal in your build screen. It has a clear hook, a sensible price at launch and enough moving pieces to avoid feeling like a bare-bones card battler. This is not a review score — we have not played it — but MadCat has at least built a machine with an interesting engine. Whether it survives the tenth run is the part we’ll be watching.
