Magic: The Gathering's Zeta Set gets a second sale on 9 December
Wizards of the Coast has apologised for the botched Zeta Set sale and confirmed a fresh 24-hour order window on 9 December, with every order placed in that window fulfilled.

Wizards of the Coast has promised a second chance at the Secret Lair x MSCHF: The Zeta Set, confirming a fresh 24-hour order window on 9 December 2026 after the original sale collapsed under an external service disruption.
The company has also apologised for the experience, and says every order placed inside that window will be fulfilled.
What went wrong with the Zeta Set sale
In an official update published on 1 October, the Secret Lair team said the problems were not a simple case of the product selling faster than expected. Early in the sale, the systems supporting the launch suffered an external service disruption, which affected the entire sale rather than a single checkout.
The Zeta Set still sold out. Wizards argues that a sell-out is not automatically a success, pointing out that many buyers spent their time in a queue that would not move, hit an error at checkout, or waited on a confirmation email that never arrived.
Why the queue was paused
The team singled out one decision for particular accountability: pausing the queue while the backend was strained. The statement says the pause was technically the right call, because letting more shoppers into a broken checkout would have made matters worse, and inventory still appeared to hold enough stock to fulfil a significant number of waiting orders.
When the queue reopened, the backlog was far larger than expected and stock normalised much closer to sold out. The result was roughly an extra hour and a half of waiting for thousands of customers, with only a small group securing the remaining copies.
What the December resale changes
Orders from the original sale are estimated to begin shipping on 5 November from the North America store and on 8 December in Europe and the United Kingdom.
For everyone who missed out, the Zeta Set returns on 9 December 2026 for a single 24-hour limited order window. Wizards says it is not a first-come race: everyone who orders inside the window will have their order fulfilled, with shipping estimated for the second half of 2027.
Buyers who already hold a Zeta Set preorder and no longer want it can request a cancellation through the Secret Lair support team until 9 October 2026, with no explanation required. Keeping the order needs no action at all.
Our opinion
It is rare to see a publisher attach a name to a failure and then hand the fix back in a fairer shape. Wizards' December window trades the adrenaline of a scramble for something duller and much better: a sale where ordering, rather than out-clicking everyone else, decides who gets the cards. The real test is whether the backend can survive a second, deliberately large rush, because a promise that every order is fulfilled is only worth as much as the queue beneath it.
