Linux kernel 7.3 brings low-VRAM and controller upgrades for gaming

Linux kernel 7.3 improves low-VRAM handling, older Radeon support and controller drivers, giving Linux gaming a practical upgrade.

Linux kernel 7.3 is now available, and this release has a particularly useful set of changes for PC gaming on Linux. Valve has contributed work around graphics memory, older AMD hardware and controller support, while the wider kernel update also touches scheduling, storage and newer graphics platforms. 12

What Linux kernel 7.3 changes for gamers

The most immediately relevant change is improved handling of video memory. The release includes work intended to make better use of systems running short of VRAM, which could help reduce the severity of memory pressure when games, desktop effects and other applications compete for the same graphics resources. It is not a universal performance boost, but it should give Linux gaming systems with older or lower-memory cards a sturdier foundation. 23

Older Radeon hardware also receives attention. Linux kernel 7.3 improves support across several generations of AMD graphics cards, including parts of the Radeon HD 7000 series, Polaris and Fiji families. The release also adds work aimed at making crash recovery more reliable on some older AMD GPUs, potentially reducing the need for a full reboot after a driver failure. 23

Valve's fingerprints are visible beyond graphics memory. The kernel includes initial built-in driver support for the 2026 Steam Controller, alongside a driver improvement for the gamepad built into MSI Claw handhelds. Intel's Nova Lake graphics are enabled by default, while the open-source Nouveau driver gains groundwork for Vulkan Video hardware decoding on supported NVIDIA systems. 23

There are useful changes outside the graphics stack, too. CPU scheduling work could improve how processing time is shared between applications, while updates to Btrfs, EXT4 and other storage paths are intended to improve storage performance. Support for future AMD Zen 6 processors has also been expanded, although those preparations matter more for upcoming hardware than for today's games. 2

What it means for a Linux gaming PC

The sensible expectation is incremental improvement rather than a magical frame-rate jump. Games still depend on the Mesa graphics stack, firmware, the relevant kernel driver and the rest of the distribution, so not every benefit will be visible immediately after installing kernel 7.3. Some of the VRAM work is also part of a longer series of changes expected to continue in later releases. 23

For players using older Radeon hardware, a low-VRAM card or a Linux handheld, though, this is the sort of release worth watching. Better support and recovery can matter more than a headline benchmark win, particularly when the alternative is a crash, a stutter or a controller that needs manual configuration. The full technical changelog remains the place to check individual hardware support before upgrading. 2

Our opinion

Linux kernel 7.3 looks like a quietly meaningful gaming release. It is not selling a single flashy feature, but it improves several of the awkward edges that can make Linux gaming feel less dependable: limited VRAM, older Radeon cards, handheld controls and recovery after a graphics failure. Valve's contributions are encouraging because they target the practical hardware problems players actually encounter rather than treating the desktop as the whole story.

The caveat is that a kernel cannot fix every layer of a PC gaming stack. The best results will depend on matching it with current Mesa drivers and a distribution that integrates the update properly. Even so, this is a useful step for the machines that benefit most from careful maintenance rather than brute-force new hardware.

Linux kernel 7.3 is available now. Players should check their distribution's support and rollback options before switching kernels, particularly on a machine used for work as well as games. 12
