Guild Saga: Vanished Worlds sets sail in its 0.8 Update
Ocelot Technologies' hand-drawn tactical RPG has opened ship travel beyond Respite Island, added the island of Arborea, 60-plus new skills and an underground arena.

Guild Saga: Vanished Worlds has finally left the island. Ocelot Technologies says the tactical RPG's 0.8 Update is live, and it does the thing Early Access players have been circling since October 2024: it lets your crew sail past Respite Island for the first time, into an ancient realm called Arborea.
Ship travel arrives as a permanent system rather than a one-off set piece, and the studio describes it as a core pillar of the full version 1.0 experience. Arborea brings its own narrative beats — an Elven character the release declines to name, rival forest kings and magical encounters — as an early taste of the multi-island adventure planned for release.
The Fighting Pits and 60-plus new skills
Underneath the fortress of Gladeheim sits the Fighting Pits, an underground arena with escalating opponents and rewards you can only earn by fighting your way through them. Alongside it comes more than 60 new skills spread across all 10 schools of magic and combat, with the heaviest push on the Engineer school, which now gets deployable machines and fresh ways to rearrange a battlefield.
Ocelot's CEO Mike — the release gives him no surname — calls 0.8 a major milestone and says player feedback will shape the road to 1.0. The same document credits him with "over 50 new skills" while the bullet points promise 60-plus, which is either heroic rounding or a press release written by the engineering department.
Why the timing is worth noting
Here is the part the announcement skips. On Steam, v0.8 Setting Sail went live on 11 September, with hotfixes following on 14 and 15 September; the press release landed on 17 September. Version 1.0 has already slipped too, pushed from the third quarter of 2026 to the second quarter of 2027 in July — roughly six extra months of development.
That context matters more than the skill count. Guild Saga is a genuinely handsome thing: an isometric, turn-based tactical RPG in a hand-drawn world, openly built in the tradition of the classics, with a party you recruit and a story that reacts to your choices. It has been in Early Access since 10 October 2024, sells for £16.75 on Steam (discounted to £13.40 at the time of writing) and offers a free demo.
Our opinion
Sailing is the right system to build next, because it is the one that turns a single island into a campaign. The awkward truth is that players who bought in two years ago are now funding a longer runway than the roadmap promised, and a 0.8 patch arriving with a press release six days after the patch itself suggests the marketing calendar, not the development one, is setting the pace. Buy it now if you enjoy shaping a tactical RPG while it is still moving — the combat and the art already justify the asking price. Wait if you want a finished story, because Q2 2027 is a long way off and Ocelot has moved that goalpost once already.
