The upcoming Netflix preview uses PS5 gameplay footage and will arrive ahead of another broadcast on Bilibili.
Netflix says its upcoming GTA 6: A Pivotal Moment preview was recorded entirely using real gameplay footage from the PlayStation 5 version.
The preview is scheduled to debut on Netflix before a Bilibili broadcast, giving Rockstar and its partners another way to keep the most anticipated game on the planet in the conversation.
A marketing event disguised as a preview
Netflix describes the project as a look at the next chapter of the GTA story, while Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick has suggested the video is only the beginning of a larger promotional campaign.
Zelnick previously compared the rollout to a meal with appetisers, a main course and dessert still to come. That is a remarkably elaborate way of saying Rockstar has more trailers in the cupboard.
Why the PS5 footage matters
Using PS5 footage gives viewers a clearer sense of what the console version is actually aiming to deliver than a pre-rendered cinematic would. It also puts the technical target firmly on current-generation hardware.
The preview is not the same thing as a launch date or a full gameplay demonstration, and Rockstar has not suddenly opened the entire game to inspection.
Our opinion
Calling any GTA announcement an event is usually marketing nonsense. In this case, the audience has already done that work for Netflix: people will watch a loading screen if it has the right logo.
The PS5 confirmation is useful, but the real value will depend on how much genuine gameplay the preview contains. GTA 6 needs no help generating hype; it needs enough detail to show what makes this world worth waiting for.
If this is truly just the appetiser, Rockstar had better make the main course very good.
