Final Fantasy XI free trial drops its time limit and raises the level cap

Square Enix has taken the 14-day stopwatch out of its free trial and lifted the character cap from level 50 to 75, reactivating trial accounts that had already lapsed.

Square Enix has taken the stopwatch out of Final Fantasy XI. The free trial’s 14-day play time limit is gone, and its character level cap has climbed from level 50 to level 75, according to the official notice dated 30 September.

What the free trial gives you now

Two numbers define the change. The time limit runs from 14 days to no restrictions, so a trial character no longer vanishes mid-errand. The character level cap moves from 50 to 75, which reopens the additional content Square Enix has released for characters built that far.

Lapsed accounts come back too. Anyone whose earlier trial period has already expired can play again from now, because the play time limit was what closed those accounts in the first place.

Vana’diel is not short of things to do

Beyond the missions, quests and battle content that have accumulated in the world, the trial sits inside the campaigns and seasonal events running now. Square Enix frames the change as a chance to bring friends, family and anyone curious into Vana’diel instead of grinding alone.

The game still holds a particular place in the series: Square Enix describes Final Fantasy XI as its first MMORPG, and it remains a Windows PC online game with a monthly subscription for full accounts rather than a one-off purchase.

Our opinion

A trial that expires teaches you to rush, and rushing is the one way to play Final Fantasy XI badly. This is a game built on slow accumulation — a linkshell, a levelling party, a quest chain you pick up again next weekend — and a 14-day hourglass was working against all of it. Removing the timer is overdue common sense. The level 75 ceiling is the more interesting half, because it hands newcomers the game as it exists now rather than the version preserved in old forum threads.
