Duck King dances back into Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves as Season 3 continues
SNK releases the 1991 breakdancer as the new Season 3 DLC fighter, with new Arcade and EOST stories and a Masami Obari anime short celebrating the season.
Duck King is back. SNK has released the breakdancing Fatal Fury veteran as the latest DLC fighter for Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves Season 3, available now — and the publisher has drafted in legendary animator Masami Obari to mark the occasion with a special anime short.
According to the announcement, Duck King has been a series staple since the very first Fatal Fury in 1991, wowing fans with nimble footwork, tricky moves and impeccable rhythm. Cedric Williams voices him in English, Anri Katsu in Japanese.
New stories, old grudges
Duck arrives with new story content in both Arcade Mode and the solo RPG mode Episodes of South Town. In EOST, Duck hunts revenge against Wolfgang Krauser, who dealt him a soul-crushing defeat years ago — and now that Krauser is back in South Town, he is fair game. The Arcade storyline, meanwhile, sees Pao Pao Café owner Richard Meyer call Duck with grave news: certain parties want to buy out the beloved hangout, and the King of Fighters tournament's cash prize is the dancing king's chance to save it.
The Obari short
The Season 3 celebration includes a new animated short from Masami Obari, the director and mechanical designer famous for his dynamic style. The film lights up South Town with a dance gig headlined by Duck King and Salvatore Ganacci, hosting a reunion between Terry Bogard, Rock Howard and Rick Strowd. Obari knows this world intimately: he was character designer and chief animation director on the Fatal Fury anime Legend of the Hungry Wolf and The New Battle, and directed Fatal Fury: The Motion Picture.
Cheap entry while you wait
SNK has also kicked off a gamescom sale: the City of the Wolves Standard Edition is down 50 per cent to $9.99/€9.99, Season Pass 1 is $10.04 (33 per cent off) and Season Pass 2 is $15.99 (20 per cent off). Season Pass 3, at $19.99/€19.99, runs Rick Strowd (out now), Duck King (August), Kim Kaphwan (September) and further unannounced fighters through the autumn. The game is available on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Steam and the Epic Games Store.
Our opinion
This is how you do a DLC drop. Duck King is a gloriously silly character with genuine 1991 pedigree, the story hooks (Krauser revenge! Pao Pao rescue!) actually sound like Fatal Fury rather than filler, and hiring Obari to animate the celebration is fan service of the highest order — the man's Fatal Fury anime basically defined the series' look for a generation.
With the base game half price in the gamescom sale, there has rarely been a cheaper excuse to see what all the howling is about. If you bounced off the REV System's complexities, a dancing breakdancer with immaculate rhythm is as good an entry point as any. Quack on.
