Factorio 2.1 is the final major update as Wube turns to new games

Factorio 2.1 brings a final wave of quality-of-life improvements before Wube shifts active development towards two new game prototypes.

Factorio 2.1 is now stable, and Wube Software says it is the factory-building game's final major update. The release focuses on quality-of-life improvements, polish and unfinished ideas from version 2.0 rather than adding another planet, enemy faction or research tree. The update follows a long experimental period and is available now on PC and Nintendo Switch, with Space Age improvements included for players who own the expansion. 1

What changes in 2.1

The headline changes are practical ones for players who have already built sprawling automated factories. Several facilities can now be flipped, including pumpjacks, burner miners and inserters, making it easier to align inputs and outputs with an existing production line. Circuit-network controls have also been expanded: players can separate input and output signals by wire colour, connect boilers and heat exchangers, and use land mines as tripwires or enemy detectors. 1

Wube has also made space logistics less awkward in Space Age. Rockets can carry multiple item types in a single launch, platforms can request supplies from one another, and a new landing-pad cargo bay lets inserters move materials directly into trains, chests and belts. Platform drag now depends on mass rather than width, which should make broader designs more viable instead of forcing everyone towards the same narrow, fast ship. 1

Quality is now optional in Space Age: the relevant systems have been separated so players can disable them while retaining the expansion. That is a useful concession for factories already balancing several layers of production. The update also brings new graphics for machines and infrastructure, plus native ARM64 Linux support for devices including Steam Frame, Raspberry Pi servers and Apple Silicon systems running Asahi Linux. 1

Before updating, Wube recommends backing up saves and blueprints. Existing 2.0 saves will load in 2.1, but changes such as the circuit input/output split may break established factory designs, and saves or blueprints converted to 2.1 cannot be downgraded. Popular mods have had time to catch up during the experimental phase, but individual mod compatibility is still worth checking before committing a long-running factory. 1

What happens next

Wube says active development on Factorio is ending because the team is satisfied with the current design and has few remaining gaps it feels compelled to fill. That does not mean the studio is leaving game development: it is already prototyping two new games. For Factorio, the expectation is now ongoing bug fixes and support rather than another sweeping expansion.

Our opinion

This is a sensible finale for a game built around removing friction. Version 2.1 does not need a new planet to feel substantial: letting players flip stubborn machines, route signals more clearly and unload platforms directly attacks the small annoyances that compound across hundreds of hours. Making Quality optional is equally smart, because it respects both players who enjoy that extra optimisation layer and those who want a cleaner factory. The important warning is that convenience can still have consequences for old designs, so backing up before updating is not busywork — it is part of the release.
