Elta: Defy All Gods hands PS5 players a free demo

Afterburner Studios has put a free PlayStation 5 demo for Elta: Defy All Gods live today, four months before the brawler-platformer launches on 2 February 2027.

A free PlayStation 5 demo for Elta: Defy All Gods is live today, four months before the action-platformer arrives on 2 February 2027. Afterburner Studios built the game with three co-founders and a dozen core staff, published through Focus Entertainment, and the demo hands players the opening of Lerna, a glacial world of ruins and industrial remnants.

What the demo actually covers

You begin by recovering Elta, the millennia-old dragon-god your people worship, then fight corrupted enemies in hand-to-hand combat and explore Lerna for hidden secrets. Afterburner has used the game's genuine opening rather than a bespoke slice, so the demo doubles as a test of how well the full release introduces its world.

A self-styled brawlervania

The studio's own word for the mix is brawlervania: the punchy melee of a brawler welded to the non-linear exploration of a search-action game. Victus, the warrior monk you control, carries three martial art stances with separate skill trees, plus magic systems that spend built-up energy on larger attacks.

Movement is the other half of the pitch. A double jump, dash, wall run and grapple are expanded by abilities Elta grants as the pair travel, and the dragon doubles as the key to routes that are otherwise out of reach. The game spans three winding sci-fi worlds, with the demo limited to the first.

Where the influences come from

Afterburner points to Hong Kong martial arts cinema, from the Ip Man saga to the Shaw Brothers catalogue, wrapped in a painterly art direction the team describes as living concept art. On PS5 the DualSense carries the weight of landed punches and platforming through its haptics. Pre-orders are open with the Vanguard Armor cosmetic skin for Victus.

The studio says the game has been in near-constant iteration for five years, and credits Focus Entertainment's design, production and QA teams with letting a small outfit hold a scope this size. Ian Cofino, co-founder and game director, frames the whole project around game feel: the team's feedback has consistently been that Elta has to be played, not watched.

Our opinion

The interesting decision here is not the demo, it is which demo: Afterburner is handing over the real opening, not a cut-down showreel, which means anyone who plays it today has already seen how the full game teaches its two halves. That is a braver bet than it looks, because a brawlervania lives or dies on whether combat and navigation are tuned to the same rhythm, and a mix of two genres is much easier to name than to balance. The name invites the comparison with the genre it borrows from, and the demo is the first honest reply. Focus Entertainment's involvement matters for a different reason: it is the difference between a twelve-person team shipping a finished game and shipping a manifesto.
