Dune: Awakening adds a full single-player mode for consoles

Update 1.5 puts Dune: Awakening on PlayStation 5 and Xbox with a full single-player mode, deep difficulty customisation and the end of the Book One story.

Arrakis has learned to share. Funcom's survival MMO Dune: Awakening now has a full single-player mode, and the console versions arrive the same week: Update 1.5 landed on 17 September across every platform, and PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S players are in for the first time — Deluxe and Ultimate owners from that day, everyone else from 22 September.

The single-player option is not a tutorial or a demo. Funcom's own announcement is blunt about it: "This is the whole game, on every platform, solo." Every storyline, every challenge and every reward, with no other players in the world. Anyone with an existing multiplayer character has to start a fresh one for it, which tells you how seriously the studio is treating it as a separate way to play rather than a switch you flip.

Your game, your rules

Solo players pick one of three difficulty presets or set the dials themselves — and they can keep fiddling mid-game. Funcom's list of tunable settings covers sandstorms, resource and XP multipliers, base building piece limits, item durability, base decay, sandworm and Coriolis storm auto-spawn, and what you drop when you die. Self-hosted servers get the same treatment, which is a real change: at launch, private servers barely offered any of it.

A few core systems behave differently when there is nobody else online. The Exchange becomes a vendor with a stock of items to buy, and the Landsraad runs a simulated competition so the politics keep moving without real guilds. Most importantly, the Coriolis storm stops being a wipe button: the Deep Desert is fully available in single-player, the map never resets, your buildings are never wiped, and the Cartographer skill now widens how much of the map you can reveal at once.

What else Update 1.5 brings

The patch is not only about going solo. Version 1.5.3.0 closes out the Book One story, rebalances combat with a pass on melee and NPCs, reworks difficulty and reward scaling in overland dungeons, and improves onboarding, the interface, gamepad support and rumble haptics. Two new face tattoos — Sandworm's Eye and The Maker's Markings — were designed from community input during the game's first anniversary livestream. Anyone who has been away for 28 days or more gets a welcome-back package scaled to their research tier, and everyone who plays between 17 September and 22 October collects a Matron's Decor reward.

For console players, this is the first time Dune: Awakening has been playable on a PlayStation or an Xbox at all. Pre-loads opened on 15 September, head start for the pricier editions began on the 17th, and the official console release follows on 22 September. The PC version has been out since 2025, so the studio is pitching this as the moment the game gets a second audience rather than a second launch.

Our opinion

A survival MMO adding a proper solo mode is usually an admission. Server populations sag, endgame groups thin out, and the pitch quietly shifts from "play with hundreds of strangers" to "play on your own schedule". Funcom has skipped the euphemism and said the quiet part loudly, and the game is better for it — plenty of people want Arrakis without a neighbour walling off their water.

The smarter detail is what solo mode does to the punishment loop. Removing the Coriolis storm's instant kill and the Deep Desert reset is a concession that losing hours of building work to a weather event is not difficulty, it is a reason to stop playing. Handing players the difficulty dials instead is the kind of choice survival games keep pretending they do not need, and it is the single most interesting thing in this update.
