Cotton Reboot! and Cotton Reboot: High Tension! are now available digitally on PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch, giving fans of classic arcade shoot-'em-ups two colourful ways to return to the candy-fuelled world of witch-in-training Cotton.

Clear River Games has brought both remasters to the platforms today. Physical editions are also planned for 10 December, with pre-orders open through the publisher's shop. The releases give the publisher a neat double bill: Cotton Reboot! revisits the 1991 Sharp X68000 original, while High Tension! follows the remaster with a newer campaign and extra systems.

What has launched

Cotton Reboot! is a remake of the 1991 side-scrolling shooter. The game follows Cotton, a witch-in-training who is drawn into a fight involving the space fairy Silk and the planet Filament. Its modernised presentation adds new visuals and a remixed soundtrack while retaining the fast, horizontally scrolling action that defines the series.

The remaster also expands the original formula with new stages, boss battles, additional modes and characters, plus an overhauled scoring system designed around contemporary shoot-'em-up play. That makes this more than a straight archival release: it is intended to make an older arcade design easier to approach on modern hardware without losing its colourful identity.

The two games are sold as separate releases. Players looking for the original remake can start with Cotton Reboot!, while those who already know that version can move on to High Tension! and its follow-up mechanics.

What *High Tension!* adds

Cotton Reboot: High Tension! is a direct follow-up to the remaster. Its story again centres on Cotton and Silk, with the magical conflict revolving around Willow, Cotton's favourite candy. This time, the Willow of Filament has become self-aware and turns against Silk's people, creating another excuse for Cotton to take to the skies.

The sequel builds on the earlier game's shooting with new magic modes and bonus features. It also adds new story cutscenes and a guest appearance from Marion, the lead character from Psikyo's Gunbird. The headline mechanic is Over Tension, which temporarily raises the game's difficulty in exchange for higher bonus multipliers. In practical terms, that gives experienced players another risk-and-reward tool to use when chasing stronger scores.

That distinction matters because the two launches are not simply the same game on two platforms. Cotton Reboot! is the modern entry point for the original remake, while High Tension! pushes the same bright witchcraft-and-candy formula into a sequel with more systems to master.

Release details

Both titles are available digitally on PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch. Clear River Games says physical disc and card editions will follow on 10 December, and its online shop is already accepting pre-orders. The digital launch therefore gives players an immediate way to try the games, while collectors have a later physical option to watch.

The release also lands at a useful time for the genre. Modern shoot-'em-ups often compete for attention through scoring systems, escalating difficulty and compact repeatable runs rather than huge open worlds. Cotton Reboot! and High Tension! fit that tradition, but their distinctive witch, fairy and candy imagery gives them a warmer personality than the usual military or science-fiction shooter.

Our opinion

This is the kind of double release that makes sense for a specialist audience. Cotton Reboot! preserves the appeal of an arcade classic while giving newcomers a more polished route into its scoring-driven action. High Tension! then offers a reason to keep going rather than treating the first remaster as the end of the road.

The strongest idea here is Over Tension. A mechanic that lets players deliberately raise the danger for better multipliers understands why people return to shoot-'em-ups: the first clear is only the beginning, and the real challenge comes from learning routes, managing risk and turning a good run into a great one. Whether the sequel's added modes feel substantial will depend on how well they support that loop, but the foundation is clear.

The launch is also refreshingly straightforward. There is no vague future window for the digital versions: both games are available now on PS5 and Switch, while the physical editions have a separate December date. For anyone who prefers bright, fast arcade action to a long campaign, Cotton's return is easy to understand and easy to pick up.
