Call of Duty movie director promises a story with a strong soul

Peter Berg says the Call of Duty film will focus on the complicated people and consequences beneath Modern Warfare's military spectacle.

Peter Berg says the upcoming Call of Duty film will treat the Modern Warfare universe as a story about people carrying the consequences of war, rather than as a simple action spectacle. The director also pointed to Captain Price, Soap, Ghost and Alex as "complicated humans" whose stories give the adaptation a stronger dramatic foundation. 1

A Modern Warfare film with more on its mind

Berg made the comments while discussing the Paramount and Activision adaptation with ComicBook. The film is set inside the Modern Warfare portion of the franchise, with Taylor Sheridan writing alongside Berg. The director said the games' missions, characters and storylines helped him understand the emotional weight he wants to carry into the cinema version. 12

That does not mean the film will leave behind the series' military hardware or violence. Berg described those elements as part of the world, but argued that the more interesting layer is the cost of becoming a warrior and the burden carried by people who put themselves in danger for others. He compared that intended focus with the darker realities behind his own war-related filmmaking. 1

Why the promise matters

Video-game adaptations often advertise their familiar names first and their actual point of view second. Berg's comments at least suggest that this Call of Duty film wants to build its identity around consequence and character, not simply recreate a mission briefing on a larger screen. That is still a promise rather than evidence of the finished film, and no detailed plot or casting for the familiar game characters has been confirmed.

The project has already established its broad creative direction. Paramount has set the film for cinemas on June 30, 2028, while Berg directs and co-writes with Sheridan. A short Modern Warfare teaser has also established the franchise's night-vision-inspired tone, although it reveals little about the eventual story. 3

Our opinion

The most encouraging part of Berg's comments is that he understands why Modern Warfare works when it is more than a parade of weapons. Captain Price, Ghost and the rest of the series' soldiers are memorable because the games frame violence as a responsibility with consequences. If the film genuinely carries that idea through its characters, it has a chance to be a war drama that happens to be built from Call of Duty, rather than a branded military blockbuster wearing the name. The June 2028 release is a long way off, so the sensible verdict for now is cautious interest: the ambition sounds right, but the finished screenplay and cast will decide whether it survives the journey to the screen.
