Modern Warfare 4 adds a useful optic placement setting

Modern Warfare 4’s new Optic Rail Placement setting lets players move weapon sights without changing their underlying performance stats.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 has added a small but surprisingly useful Gunsmith option: Optic Rail Placement lets players move an equipped sight forwards or backwards along the weapon’s top rail. The change is cosmetic rather than a new weapon statistic, but it alters how the optic sits in the first-person view and gives players another way to tune the look and feel of their loadouts. 1

The feature was highlighted in coverage published after the game’s launch weekend. It sits alongside Modern Warfare 4’s broader Gunsmith systems, including the Gunny assistant, which can assemble weapon configurations around different engagement ranges. Optic Rail Placement is a much narrower tool, but it is easier to understand: players adjust a slider and watch the sight move along the rail in the Gunsmith interface. 1

How Optic Rail Placement works

Moving the optic forwards makes it appear smaller during aiming and leaves more of the surrounding view visible. Pulling it backwards makes the sight occupy more of the screen. That does not reduce recoil, improve accuracy or change another underlying performance stat, according to the report; it changes the presentation of the weapon and the player’s sight picture instead. 1

That distinction matters in a competitive shooter. A setting that does not alter the numbers can still affect how comfortable a weapon feels, especially during sustained fire or when a player is trying to keep more of the battlefield visible around an optic. The effect should not be confused with a gameplay buff, though: the advantage is preference and visibility, not a hidden attachment bonus.

The idea also has a precedent in the series. The 2022 Modern Warfare 2 reboot offered an Eye Position slider through its Weapon Tuning system, allowing some compatible optics to appear nearer or further away. Modern Warfare 4’s version is more direct because it visibly repositions the sight on the weapon rather than presenting the change as an abstract tuning value. 1

Modern Warfare 4 launched on Steam on October 23, 2026, and its official store page lists Infinity Ward as the developer and Activision as the publisher. 2 Optic Rail Placement is therefore a small post-launch discovery rather than a separate mode or major content drop, but it is the kind of quality-of-life detail that dedicated Gunsmith users may appreciate.

Our opinion

Optic Rail Placement sounds like a sensible addition because it gives players control over a visual choice without pretending to rebalance the weapon. Competitive players can choose the sight picture they find least distracting, while everyone else can leave the setting alone. It is not a headline feature on the scale of a new map or mode, but it makes Modern Warfare 4’s customisation system feel a little more considered.
