Birdseed VR brings cosy birdwatching to Steam on 8 October
Buffalo Buffalo's gentle VR birdwatching game lands on Steam and SteamVR on 8 October, complete with an in-game camera, a photo journal and co-op birding.

Birdseed, the cosy VR birdwatching game from indie studio Buffalo Buffalo, arrives on Steam and SteamVR on 8 October 2026. The Steam listing currently shows the release as coming, with Windows and VR-only support.
The premise is exactly what it sounds like. Players step into painted forest settings and photograph the chunkiest, cutest birds they can find, using an in-game camera built to feel like the real thing. Aim, shoot and the shot goes into a journal, where every bird carries a three-star rating worth chasing.
Binoculars help players pick out a subject and plan the right lens before committing to a frame, and the birds and their calls are modelled on real species rather than invented ones.
Multiplayer is built around sharing rather than competition. Friends can birdwatch together, compare their best scores and chat while they wander, and the Steam page lists single-player, online co-op, tracked controller support and in-app purchases. Two cosmetic packs, the Cardinal Pack and the Gray Flycatcher Pack, are listed separately as coming soon.
Our opinion
VR has no shortage of games that ask you to survive something, and almost none that ask you to stand still and look at a bird. Birdseed's bet is that the headset's real strength is presence rather than panic, and a camera that mimics weight and a journal that fills with three-star photos is a smarter use of that than another wave shooter.
The risk is thinness: a handful of forest levels and a photo loop can run out of road quickly, which is presumably what the daily quests and the paid cosmetic packs are for. If the co-op birding lands, though, a quiet game you can share is a genuinely underserved slot on SteamVR, and eight quid is a fair price for finding out.
