ARC Raiders is rebuilding Celeste around her real actor
Embark Studios says it has rebuilt its performance capture for ARC Raiders so Celeste's face and voice finally match the actor who plays her.

Embark Studios is changing how ARC Raiders captures its actors, and Celeste is first in line: the character's face and voice will now match Diana Gardner, the performer who has played her since the project began.
In a post published on 4 October, Embark said Celeste's limited expressive capabilities had been immersion-breaking, producing facial animations that fell short of communicating the stakes and the stories the studio wants to tell.
What is actually changing
The Frozen Trail trailer, due on 6 October, is the first ARC Raiders footage to use full motion capture, including a more detailed and accurate face that lets animators map expression and emotion in finer detail. Celeste has been brought closer to Gardner's likeness in the process, and Embark says she will look a little different to players who know the previous model.
The work is not confined to cinematics. When the Frozen Trail update lands, Celeste's in-game appearance will also shift toward her actor, with voice and face lining up for the first time. Embark called that a start and said it will keep improving the technology.
Who Celeste is
Celeste is the unofficial leader of Speranza, the underground settlement that forms ARC Raiders' social hub, and one of the characters players meet most often. Gardner has voiced her from the beginning of development, but the studio says the character has never fully represented the depth of her performance.
What comes next
Embark says future updates will bring more characters into line with their real-world actors, arguing that more faithful representation is felt by players and that it wants to integrate real human performances into every interaction.
Our opinion
Performance capture is expensive, slow and deeply unfashionable next to a generative pipeline, so Embark's decision to put an actor's actual face on her own character is a pointed one. ARC Raiders has spent its life being praised for atmosphere and quietly criticised for characters who felt like mannequins, and the studio is answering that with the most expensive possible fix: rebuilding the capture rig rather than touching up textures. Gardner has been Celeste since before anyone was playing, which makes this a correction of a launch compromise rather than a marketing novelty. The real test arrives with the characters Embark says come next; if Celeste is a one-off showcase and the rest keep the old rig, the authenticity line will read as a trailer instead of a policy.
