The New Denpa Men is shutting down on 7 December

Genius Sonority is closing its free-to-play Nintendo Switch game on 7 December, with paid items withdrawn the same day the notice appeared.

Genius Sonority will end service for The New Denpa Men on 7 December 2026, the studio said in a notice posted on the game's official site on 5 October. The free-to-play Nintendo Switch game will go offline at 11:00 JST, and sales of paid items stopped the same day the announcement went up.

The notice is unusually short on explanation. Genius Sonority said only that it had concluded it would be difficult to keep running a service that meets players' expectations, and apologised for what it called a sudden announcement. There is no mention of a replacement game, a merger into another title, or an offline mode that would preserve anything players have built up.

Paid currency sales stopped immediately

Anything bought with real money is affected straight away. Sales of Jewels, Jewel Packs, Value Packs, the Stamina Expansion Pack and the Create Pack all ended at 11:00 JST on 5 October, at the same moment the shutdown was confirmed. Events still running when the servers close will be cut off partway through, with no make-good offered.

Unused paid currency will be refunded under Article 20, Paragraph 1 of Japan's Payment Services Act. Genius Sonority says the refund window and the procedure will be published on the official site after service ends. Players need their Support ID to claim, and that ID remains visible from the Support option on the app's title screen only until 31 March 2027, so it is worth writing down now. The studio has also asked players not to delete or reinstall the app until refunds have been completed, because the data is needed to verify claims.

A short life for a long-running series

The New Denpa Men revived a cult series about collecting radio-wave people, and it arrived on Nintendo Switch with a free-to-play structure built around stamina and currency packs. Its run is short by the standards of the series it belongs to. Free-to-play games live or die on retention, and a shutdown announced with two months' notice, alongside the immediate closure of the store, reads as a decision that had already been taken.

Our opinion

Two months is a thin runway for a live game, and closing the shop on the same afternoon as the announcement is the part that will sting. Anyone who topped up a Jewel pack last week had no warning at all. Genius Sonority has done the decent thing by spelling out the refund route under Japanese consumer law, and the Support ID deadline is genuinely important information rather than a formality, but the sequencing is poor. A fortnight of notice before payments stop would have cost the studio very little and saved its most committed players a great deal of irritation.

There is also a quiet lesson here about free-to-play preservation. When The New Denpa Men goes dark in December, the game does not become a dusty cartridge; it simply stops existing. For a series with this much goodwill behind it, an offline send-off would have been a graceful final gesture, and its absence says more about the economics of live service games than any statement could.
