The House Before beta demo turns you into a living house

The House Before’s beta demo turns its living-house protagonist into an unsettling maze of wounds, tunnels and grotesque creatures.

A first-person view of a dark organic corridor in The House Before

The House Before is a strange game in the most literal sense: its protagonist is a living house, with bones that become pipes, organs that form labyrinths and a body full of grotesque creatures. Its new beta demo is now available through Steam, giving players an early look at an eldritch adventure that blends visual-novel storytelling, exploration and small interactive challenges.1

The premise is deliberately unsettling. Rather than exploring a haunted building, you are the building. The demo sends players through intricate wounds etched into the house’s skin, while shapeless entities inside it react to a history of crimes committed long before the story begins. That inversion gives the horror a particularly physical edge: the setting is not merely somewhere the player visits, but the thing they inhabit and try to understand.

According to the demo description, the game combines adventure mechanics with visual-novel elements and simple mini-games.1 That suggests a measured pace rather than an action-heavy horror experience. The appeal is likely to come from piecing together the house’s identity, learning how its internal spaces connect and seeing how its bizarre inhabitants fit into the wider mystery.

The project’s visual direction is another major part of the pitch. The source material describes the artwork as superb, and the official Steam imagery backs up that promise with a grainy, organic first-person view of pipes, tunnels and a dark corridor.1 It looks closer to a corrupted medical instrument or a half-remembered nightmare than a conventional mansion, which is exactly the sort of visual language the premise needs.

The demo is being distributed through Steam, where players can request access to the beta version.1 The House Before’s current presentation makes no promise of a conventional power fantasy: its central joke is that being a house means dealing with wounds, creatures and an existence that began before the player had any say in it.

Our opinion

The House Before has one of those premises that does useful work before a single mechanic is explained. Turning the player into the haunted place creates an immediate question — what does survival mean when the body under threat is also the world being explored? The demo’s low-resolution, biological visual style appears well matched to that idea. It is an early build, so the final balance between visual-novel storytelling, exploration and mini-games remains to be seen, but this is an unusually memorable setup for a horror adventure.

For players who prefer unsettling world-building and deliberately odd concepts to familiar haunted-house clichés, the beta demo is worth watching. Just do not expect to be the person investigating the house. You are the house.1
