Terranigma returns on modern platforms in January 2027
Clear River Games is bringing the 1995 action RPG to modern consoles and PC with rewind, save-anywhere and other quality-of-life upgrades.
Terranigma is getting its first modern re-release on 14 January 2027, when Clear River Games will bring the classic action RPG to Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC via Steam and GOG. 12
The original Terranigma launched on the Super Famicom in 1995. Developed by Quintet and designed around a story of creation, destruction and the rebuilding of civilisation, it follows Ark after he opens a forbidden door in the village of Crysta. The adventure moves between a subterranean Darkside and the restored surface world, with exploration, dungeon combat and a world that changes as life returns.
Clear River Games describes the release as the first modern re-release for a game that has otherwise remained tied to its 16-bit debut. The Steam listing confirms the 14 January 2027 date and names Clear River Games as publisher, while crediting Square Enix, Quintet and manga artist Kamui Fujiwara. 2
What is changing
The new version adds quality-of-life features rather than presenting itself as a ground-up remake. Players can expect an on-screen mini-map, remappable controls, a music player, an enemy museum, rewind and the ability to save and load anywhere. The release also includes higher-resolution background artwork and smoother access to items and magic. 2
Terranigma’s action-RPG structure remains the centre of the package. Ark fights with a spear, using thrusts, dashes and jump attacks, while exploration gradually unlocks abilities and routes through the game’s recovering world. The story’s unusual focus on restoring plants, birds, animals and human civilisation is a major reason the game still stands apart from more conventional 1990s RPGs. 12
Our opinion
A modern release makes more sense for Terranigma than a simple nostalgia label suggests. Its systems are recognisably old-school, but the restoration of a living world gives the adventure a stronger identity than many contemporaries. The rewind and save-anywhere options should also remove some of the friction without changing what made the original distinctive. The important test now is whether the new presentation respects the pixel-art character of the original while making it easier to play on current hardware.
