Super Meat Boy 3D teams up with MOUSE: P.I. For Hire

Super Meat Boy 3D adds MOUSE: P.I. For Hire detective Jack Pepper as a playable character in a colourful new indie crossover.

Super Meat Boy 3D and MOUSE: P.I. For Hire collaboration featuring Meat Boy and Jack Pepper

Super Meat Boy 3D has added Jack Pepper, the trenchcoat-wearing detective from MOUSE: P.I. For Hire, as a playable character in a new crossover update. The collaboration brings Fumi Games' rubber-hose shooter into the brightly coloured, brutally unforgiving platformer, giving players a very different way to tackle its floating obstacle courses. 1

The update was presented in an official collaboration trailer showing Meat Boy and Jack Pepper together in the game's world. The thumbnail's monochrome presentation also nods to MOUSE: P.I. For Hire's rubber-hose cartoon style, while the platforming footage keeps the focus on Super Meat Boy 3D's familiar jumps, hazards and repeated near-misses. 2

Jack Pepper is the protagonist of MOUSE: P.I. For Hire, a jazz-fuelled first-person shooter built around 1930s-inspired animation and a hard-boiled detective aesthetic. In Super Meat Boy 3D, that character becomes a playable alternative rather than a separate level or standalone expansion, making this a character collaboration rather than a full crossover campaign.

The pairing is an unusually tidy fit. Both games lean into cartoon violence and exaggerated movement, even though one is a precision platformer and the other is a first-person shooter. Super Meat Boy 3D's developers can borrow Jack Pepper's instantly recognisable silhouette without asking players to learn an entirely new ruleset, while MOUSE gets another route into the attention of players who might not yet have tried its shooter.

PC Gamer's report also notes that the update arrives alongside quality-of-life changes and support for DLSS and FSR. Those technical additions are useful, but the character swap is the headline feature: it gives an already demanding game a fresh visual hook without pretending that the two games have suddenly become the same thing. 1

The official trailer describes the update as available now. That means this is a live addition to Super Meat Boy 3D rather than a future announcement, although platform availability and the exact download behaviour can still depend on the player's installed version and storefront.

Our opinion

This is the sort of small crossover that makes sense. It is specific, immediately readable and grounded in the personalities of both games, rather than being a token costume with no connection to the guest character. Jack Pepper's noir design also looks surprisingly natural against Super Meat Boy 3D's hazards. It will not transform the platformer, but it gives returning players a reason to jump back into its levels and gives MOUSE: P.I. For Hire a memorable bit of extra visibility.
