Romancing SaGa 2 remake passes one million copies

Square Enix says its remake has passed one million copies, with new commemorative artwork and a video marking the series milestone.

Square Enix says Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven has sold more than one million copies worldwide. The remake has reached that milestone ahead of the next Romancing SaGa remake, giving the long-running role-playing series its first million-selling release in nearly three decades.

The news was reported by Famitsu on 23 October, which also reported a newly drawn commemorative illustration by the game’s main illustrator, Yoshirō Ambe. A celebration video has also been released for players. Those additions turn the sales announcement into a small milestone event for the remake and its audience.

The remake launched in October 2024 for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4 and PC, followed by a Nintendo Switch 2 Edition in 2025. It rebuilds the 1993 RPG Romancing SaGa 2 in full 3D while retaining its succession-driven story and signature systems, including formations and the ability to learn techniques during battle.

Square Enix’s official website describes a generational adventure in which players lead the Empire of Varennes through successive rulers. The remake adds fully voiced event scenes, a timeline-based battle system and United Attacks, modernising the presentation without removing its central idea: the empire and its history change according to the player’s decisions.

The one-million milestone is especially notable for the wider series. AUTOMATON reports that the last SaGa title to reach that figure was SaGa Frontier in 1997, making this the franchise’s first million-seller in 29 years. That renewed interest arrives before Romancing SaGa 3: Destiny United, the next full remake, which Square Enix currently lists for 16 February 2027.

The official website lists Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven across its current platforms, while Steam confirms the remake’s English title, release history and core premise. The milestone therefore reflects sales of a substantial multi-platform release rather than a single-platform launch.

Our opinion

This is the sort of milestone that matters beyond a neat sales headline. Romancing SaGa 2 was never the most straightforward RPG to modernise, because its appeal rests on systems that let players shape an empire over generations. Reaching one million suggests the remake made that unusual structure approachable without sanding away its identity. The commemorative artwork and video are fitting signs that Square Enix sees this as a series moment, not just a quarterly number. The next test is whether Romancing SaGa 3: Destiny United can turn that renewed curiosity into a sustained comeback.
