Modern Warfare 4 will close the series as a new COD sub-franchise begins

Activision says Modern Warfare 4 will conclude the current storyline before Call of Duty moves towards a new sub-franchise.

The current Call of Duty: Modern Warfare storyline will end with Modern Warfare 4, while Activision is already laying the groundwork for a new sub-franchise. The news comes from Activision chief marketing officer Tyler Bahl, who told The Game Business that the forthcoming game is intended to be the “epic conclusion” of this recent Modern Warfare series, as reported by TheSixthAxis.12

Bahl said the decision does not mean every character or story element must disappear. Instead, Activision wants to close this chapter and launch another one. He also said the publisher had heard criticism that the repeated cycle of Black Ops and Modern Warfare was no longer giving players the fresh direction they wanted.

That new direction is still deliberately vague. Activision has apparently already established the foundations for a future Call of Duty sub-franchise, but no name, setting or release window has been announced. For now, the concrete project is Modern Warfare 4, which is set in Korea and features a bearded Captain Price under the tagline “No line holds forever”.

The game is scheduled to launch on 23 October 2026 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Nintendo Switch 2. It will not release on PlayStation 4 or Xbox One, platforms that are also losing support for Warzone later this year.13

The announcement gives Modern Warfare 4 a clearer role than a routine sequel. It is not only another entry in the rebooted storyline; it is the planned endpoint for this particular version of the series, with Activision using the next game to test a different long-term identity for its flagship shooter.

Our opinion

The sensible reading is that Activision is trying to create room for Call of Duty to change without abandoning the audience that has carried Modern Warfare through its latest run. Calling this the ending of a chapter is more meaningful than promising a permanent goodbye, but the next sub-franchise will need a genuinely distinct premise rather than another coat of paint on the same annual formula.
