HellHeart Breaker is a roguelite where romance is a weapon

The Cuisineer studio's genre mash-up is on the Tokyo Game Show floor with publisher Red Dunes Games: date a Clan Scion for her powers, or face her as a boss.

The HellHeart Breaker key art: a masked protagonist with a glowing red heart emblem stands dead centre, ringed by horned and masked Underworld characters, floating lanterns and caged towers, with the game's red logo across the lower third

HellHeart Breaker, the genre-splicing dungeon crawler from BattleBrew Productions, is on the show floor at Tokyo Game Show as part of a nine-title line-up from the Abu Dhabi-based publisher Red Dunes Games.

It is not a surprise arrival. An announcement trailer went up on the Red Dunes Games YouTube channel on 11 September, and a playable demo has been sitting on Steam since June. The booth at Hall 7, N03, in Makuhari Messe is the chance to play it in public at Japan's biggest show, though that window is shorter than the press release planned: organisers cancelled the typhoon-threatened final day on 19 September, so Sunday 20 September is now the last one.

Dating is the upgrade path

You wake in a forgotten room in a bathhouse with no memory of who you are and an ominous prophecy hanging over you. The setting is Aashraya, described as the last remaining city in an Asian-inspired Underworld of smoke and neon, and the plan is to fight your way back out of it.

The romance system is not a side dish. Monster girls you court hand over new abilities and elemental powers, and the ones you leave alone become the bosses standing between you and the surface. The cast so far includes a Naga princess, an Oni blacksmith, a Kitsune courtesan and an Asuran enforcer, and BattleBrew says your choices decide whether Aashraya is saved or finished.

Seven clans, 35 weapons and nine endings

The feature list is generous: seven clans with their own agendas across seven worlds, 35 weapons including the jian and katar, seven elemental skill trees, augments that modify your abilities, procedurally generated roguelite runs, nine planned endings, customisable outfits, home decoration, fishing and food stalls at the Kappa Market. Two versions of the protagonist are planned as well.

When and where you can play it

The Steam listing, checked this week, keeps HellHeart Breaker at coming soon with a Q2 2027 window, names BattleBrew Productions as developer and both BattleBrew and Red Dunes Games as publishers, and files it under Action and Simulation. Red Dunes is pitching it for PC and consoles, though the demo already on Steam, listed separately as HellHeart Breaker Demo, arrived on 6 June and covers Windows only.

Our opinion

Roguelites and dating sims have been circling each other for years without either side quite committing. This one is unusually honest about the trade. In most games with a romance system, affection unlocks dialogue; in most roguelites, power unlocks through repetition. Making the courtship itself the power curve, and making the character you skipped the boss you have to fight, folds two systems into one decision that actually costs you something.

BattleBrew has form exactly where this usually goes wrong. Cuisineer sold a dungeon crawler on the strength of a restaurant, which is the same trick of making the soft mechanic load-bearing. The risk is the other half of the promise: nine endings across seven clans is an enormous amount of authored content to fund, and a Q2 2027 window with no console list behind it is a date the game has not earned yet. Still, of the nine titles Red Dunes has dragged to Chiba this week, this is the one where the pitch and the mechanics are the same sentence.
