Culdcept BEGINS physical edition hits Europe and US

Neos has put Culdcept BEGINS on cartridge for Nintendo Switch 2 in Europe and North America, with a Steam demo out now ahead of the PC release in the fourth quarter.

The physical edition of Culdcept BEGINS for Nintendo Switch 2 is on sale in Europe and North America from today, 17 September, seven weeks after the card-and-board revival arrived digitally on Nintendo's consoles. Neos Corporation also put a demo of the game on Steam on 16 September, giving PC players their first hands-on taste before the full release lands on the platform in the fourth quarter of 2026.

What the boxed editions actually contain

Two physical options ship in Europe and North America. The Standard Edition includes the full game on a cartridge and a Game Booklet, and the SteelBook Edition adds a slip-lid box, a SteelBook case, an original soundtrack CD and ten creature cards. Both the booklet and the SteelBook Edition are limited to Europe and North America; Neos lists only the Standard Edition for sale elsewhere. The Nintendo Switch 2 Edition includes the original Nintendo Switch game plus the Switch 2 upgrade pack, so the cartridge covers both machines.

Culdcept has been quietly back since July

The digital release was not today's news. Culdcept BEGINS went on sale digitally for Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 on 16 July 2026, and Neos has been patching it ever since: version 1.0.6 arrived on 15 September. The game is a card and board hybrid for one to four players in which you roll dice, claim territories and summon creatures from a deck of cards, and it supports Japanese, English, Chinese in both scripts and Korean. Online play on Nintendo's consoles requires a Nintendo Switch Online membership.

A Famitsu award and a launch bonus with a history

Neos is leaning on the series' pedigree for the physical launch. Anyone buying a Switch or Switch 2 edition in the qualifying window gets early purchase bonuses drawn from the original game, including characters created by Satoshi Matsuura that appear as computer opponents and player avatars, plus a Book Cover for the in-game deck. In Europe and North America those bonuses opened at midnight on 17 September. The game also took a Gold Hall of Fame place in Weekly Famitsu's New Game Cross Review, an award the publisher has been quoting since the summer. Culdcept first appeared on the Saturn and PlayStation in the late 1990s, and this is the first new entry in roughly a decade. It is published and developed by Neos Corporation, with Omiya Soft credited on the game.

Our opinion

The odd thing about this launch is how quiet it has been. Culdcept is a genuine cult series, and a new entry is the sort of thing that normally arrives with a trailer, a collector's edition and a weekend of shouting; instead the digital version slipped out in July and the boxed version appeared with a patch note. That is a shame, because the genre mix here is rarer than the marketing suggests: a board game with a deck-building spine, built for four players around one television, is exactly the kind of thing that thrives on the Switch. The SteelBook Edition is the tell. Sellotaping a soundtrack CD and ten creature cards to a cartridge is an appeal to the people who never stopped playing the originals, and that is a reasonable bet on a series this old. The Steam demo matters more than the box, though. Neos has until the end of the year to convince PC players that a 1990s board-and-card formula still works with a mouse, and a demo is the honest way to make that argument.
