CriticalStage online TRPG tool launches on 1 December
CriticalStage will officially launch on 1 December with browser-based 2D and 3D TRPG sessions, visual effects and CharacterStage integration.
CriticalStage, a free browser-based online TRPG session tool, is set to leave its current open beta and launch officially on 1 December 2026. It will work on PC and smartphones without an installation, with a focus on making tabletop sessions feel more like a live, visual game rather than a stack of disconnected tabs.12
The platform combines a 2D or 3D play area with chat, dice rolls, music and sound effects. Its official website presents the service as a single browser workspace for running a session, while the announcement reported by AUTOMATON says the board view can be switched between 2D and 3D with one click.12
What CriticalStage does
CriticalStage supports BCDice-based rolls and lets users save commands in a chat palette. That gives it the practical basics expected from an online session tool, but the more distinctive pitch is visual. Game masters can apply effects, animate character standees and use board elements designed to make the table easier to read at a glance.2
The official product site shows a 3D dungeon board with character figures, a chat panel and dice-related controls. It also highlights browser access, smartphone support and a no-installation setup, making the service straightforward to try without asking every player to download a dedicated client.1
The tool also includes features aimed at presentation and session management. Enemy statistics can be displayed as bars, character artwork can be turned into map tokens and text can be placed on the board as a panel. Those features should be useful for groups that want status effects, scene information and character positions to remain visible instead of disappearing into a chat stream.2
CharacterStage connection
CriticalStage is paired with CharacterStage, a companion character-sheet application. Character data can be transferred into CriticalStage, including the session token, ability values and chat-palette information. The services are designed to keep preparation and play connected rather than making a group rebuild its characters when the session starts.2
The current CharacterStage integration covers Dungeons & Dragons 5e and 5.5e, Call of Cthulhu and New Call of Cthulhu, Shinobigami, Pathfinder RPG in beta, and Tenka Ryouran in beta. That is a fairly focused list, so the usefulness of the wider ecosystem will depend on whether more systems are added after launch.2
Our opinion
CriticalStage is aiming at a sensible weakness in online tabletop play: the rules may be digital, but the table can still feel visually flat. A one-click 2D/3D switch, animated standees and readable board panels are practical ways to give a session more atmosphere without forcing the group into a full virtual-world platform. The 1 December launch date matters because it gives curious groups a clear point at which to try the complete service.
The caveat is breadth. A slick board and good presentation cannot compensate for missing system support if a group’s preferred game is not covered. For now, CriticalStage looks most promising for players who value visual staging and already use one of its supported character-sheet systems. Its free, browser-based access makes that an easy proposition to test, but the long-term appeal will rest on expansion beyond the current shortlist.
CriticalStage is scheduled to launch officially on 1 December 2026 for PC and smartphone browsers. It is free to use and does not require installation.12
