Borderlands franchise crosses 100 million units sold
Gearbox and 2K say Borderlands has passed 100 million units sold, while The Hunt fundraising event and more Borderlands 4 content are announced.
Gearbox Software and 2K say the Borderlands franchise has crossed 100 million units sold, marking a major milestone for the series ahead of its next phase. The announcement appeared in an official community message that also looked back at the first year of Borderlands 4 and previewed a fundraising event for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.1
The message says the original Borderlands launched in 2009. It does not break the 100 million figure down by game, platform or region, so the total is best understood as a franchise-wide sales milestone rather than a new performance figure for Borderlands 4 alone.1
Gearbox and 2K also said Borderlands 4’s first year included two Story Packs, five Bounty Packs, two new Vault Hunters, features and activities. The companies said more content is planned for next year, but offered no detailed roadmap or new release date in the announcement.1
From November 6, Borderlands players are due to take part in The Hunt fundraising event. 2K Foundations and Gearbox said they will match donations up to last year’s record amount, potentially raising more than $230,000 for St. Jude. Donation availability and promotion details may vary by region.1
Our opinion
The sales milestone matters because it confirms Borderlands remains one of gaming’s biggest long-running shooter franchises, but the announcement is more celebration than forward-looking reveal. The useful detail for players is the fundraising event and the promise of more Borderlands 4 content; the larger roadmap is still being held back.
