Gamescom Opening Night Live 2026: when to watch and what to expect

Gamescom Opening Night Live returns to Cologne on Aug. 25 with roughly two hours of new trailers, announcements and gameplay reveals. Hosted by Geoff Keighley, the show is the noisy opening salvo for Gamescom week — and publishers have a narrow window to grab attention before GTA 6 arrives and sucks all the oxygen out of the room.

The 30-minute pre-show begins at 7:30 p.m. CEST, with the main presentation starting at 8 p.m. CEST. That means viewers can tune in at:

The main event is expected to run for about two hours. In other words, it is long enough to reveal several games, revisit several others and still find time for a presenter to say “world premiere” with the urgency of someone defusing a bomb.

The show will stream through the official Gamescom website, along with the event’s YouTube and Twitch channels.

Gamescom Opening Night Live comes directly from Germany, making the 8 p.m. CEST start particularly convenient for European viewers. It is not quite prime-time television, but it is close enough that most people will not need to negotiate with their alarm clock or explain to a partner why they are awake at an hour usually reserved for bin collections.

The announced line-up includes The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past, Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, Gears of War: E-Day, Ananta, Tides of Annihilation, Metro 2039, Game of Thrones: War for Westeros and Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons.

There is a decent spread here, from enormous established franchises to newer games still trying to prove they deserve space on your wishlist. Final Fantasy 7 Revelation is expected to receive another look after its appearance at Summer Game Fest, while Game of Thrones: War for Westeros could show its real-time strategy gameplay.

Microsoft is also continuing to build anticipation for Gears of War: E-Day, one of its major upcoming releases. The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past is a legacy expansion, Tides of Annihilation is still pitching its action around Arthurian legend, and Metro 2039 looks set to make the post-apocalypse even bleaker. That last part takes some doing, but the Metro series has never been shy about making misery look atmospheric.

Those games should take up only part of the show, leaving room for additional reveals. Marvel’s Wolverine, Onimusha: Way of the Sword and Control Resonant are among the other games that could appear, while smaller and more ambitious projects are expected to fill the gaps between the headline trailers.

Gamescom week is busy beyond Tuesday night. The Future Games Show follows on Aug. 26, while the Awesome Indies Show and GTA 6 Extended Preview are scheduled for Aug. 27. Xbox will also broadcast from the Gamescom show floor on Aug. 26 and 27, with interviews, gameplay reveals and more trailers.

The verdict: Opening Night Live has a strong confirmed line-up, a mercifully sensible European start time and enough space left for surprises. Just remember that a game being shown on stage does not mean it is launching soon. In this industry, “coming eventually” is still the most dependable release window available.
